The IoT Meetup: Converse, Create, Collaborate

The Internet Society Zimbabwe Chapter presents The IoT Meetup: an exciting convening that will bring together Zimbabweans with a keen interest in solving some of the pressing issues facing the country using IoT. The meetup is a drive by ISOC Zimbabwe to create a platform for conversations around IoT security, and the potential benefits of Internet Connected devices. More so, it seek to harness innovation potential by creating a space for IoT creativity and collaboration.

Date: 6 December 2018

Venue: B2C Coworking Space

Time : 9am- 4pm

The IoT Meetup will be divided into 3 highly engaging segments.

  1. Converse

The Internet of Things has arrived and it’s going to introduce incredible opportunities over the next five years. It is critical that Zimbabwe be part of this historic digital revolution.

And while smart things are exactly that, the IoT industry has a long way to go in terms of overall security. Many of today’s IoT devices are rushed to market with little consideration for basic security and privacy protections: “Insecurity by design.” Hence we are creating a platform for conversation amongst industry leaders and experts, policymakers, Service providers and manufacturers in Zimbabwe and beyond on how we can innovate yet upholding security and privacy of users. Moreso, how we can create an enabling environment for innovation. This will be in form of a presentation and panel discussion.

Speakers (TBA)

  1. 2. Create

The IoT Meetup will also feature a highly competitive, fast tracked idea formulation hackathon. We are very excited about this because in just 2 hours, teams must develop an IoT Solution or proposal for the challenge they are given. Focus areas will be

  • Health
  • Smart Cities
  • Agriculture
  • Tourism and Hospitality
  • Smart Energy

Teams will be made up to various skill sets, (you don’t have to be in IT to participate).

  1. Collaborate

The teams will get an opportunity to pitch their idea to a panel of judges who will select the winners. That’s not only that, non competing delegates will also have an opportunity to vote for the best idea. The 5 teams will battle for the prize and stand a chance to submit their proposal to the Internet Society Beyond the Net Medium grants of up to $30 000 in early 2019.

The meetup will also provide a platform for networking, meet and greet to foster continued engagement amongst its membership to for capacity building.
